Self-directed learning centers for retirees have proved successful on scores of major university campuses around the country. CCR at the Riverhead Campus of Long Island University is one of the first such facilities in Suffolk County. If you are a retired person who seeks intellectual stimulation, meeting new people and active involvement, CCR is for you!
Founded in 1981, CCR capitalizes on the variety of skills and life experiences of its members. Members act together to design their own programs and contribute as presenters and discussion participants. CCR is educational and entertaining—stimulating and fun.
CCR employs a we-run-it-ourselves way of doing things. Members share responsibility in curriculum planning, program development, and subject presentations. Since each year's curriculum consists of whatever subjects the members choose, it changes year to year. The subjects cover a wide variety of topics,
As a CCR member, you are involved in a variety of activities:
All participation is voluntary. Enrollees may attend all or selected classes as they wish. There are no exams or homework - classes are to be enjoyed!
CCR sessions are scheduled to meet two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday) from September to May, with a winter break in January. The mornings sessions run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a brown bag lunch. The afternoon sessions run from noon - 1 p.m.
