Pharmacists are increasingly relied upon to assume leadership roles in patient care and health care organizations. Regardless of their title or formal position in the organization, pharmacists will have the opportunity to lead and set the direction. Pharmacists in the greater New York area regularly express an interest in additional pharmacy management training. Senior pharmacy leaders in the region have also expressed an interest in funding continuing pharmacy leadership education for emerging pharmacy leaders and middle managers to improve their transition into larger roles. Additionally, students continue to express an increasing interest in pharmacy leadership and management. As a result, the LIU Pharmacy designed a comprehensive series of progressive curricular leadership offerings for students.
The LIU School of Pharmacy has established a national reputation for excellence in developing leaders and are committed to the future development of pharmacists for management positions.
M.S. in Pharmacy Administration
The program will take a minimum of two calendar years to complete. Of the total required 33 credits, 27 are from classroom instruction and 6 are from a mentored practicum related to experiential learning activities in Pharmacy Administration. The practical learning will include a research project that has significant impact on improving patient care; the results of the project must be presented at a regional or national meeting, preferably as a platform presentation. The primary objective of the program is the preparation of pharmacists who will assume pharmacy management positions. Graduates of the program will have gained both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences related to managing in the health care environment, specifically related to the safe and effective use of medications. The proposed MS program will provide a theoretical foundation in Pharmacy Administration. The core courses within the curriculum are designed to cover content areas essential to Pharmacy Administration.
Participants will receive training in the following areas:
• interdisciplinary problem solving and decision-making skills;
• organization of integrated health care systems and the importance of interprofessional health care teams;
• leadership and administrative skills necessary to manage medication-related needs of patients;
• strategies in the prevention of medication errors and adverse events;
• managing cost-effective drug utilization through the application of pharmacoeconomic principles;
• programs and services that emphasize the health needs of the public with respect to the prevention and treatment of disease;
• identifying, analyzing, and evaluating health care trends and public policy;
• role of pharmacy in conducting and supporting drug research.
• public health and quality patient care through optimal and responsible use of drugs.
Have graduated from an ACPE-accredited school/college of pharmacy with a minimum cGPA of 3.0

Dr. Scott M. Mark has over 30 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience in a variety of diverse roles where he has held a variety of roles in the commercial, academic, and provider spaces in healthcare. He was most recently with Craneware, Inc where he served in roles as a Customer Success Manager, and Vice President and Solutions Architect. Previously, he worked as the Vice President of the start-up division of Craneware Healthcare Intelligence where he helped develop and launch a new cost analytics tool for hospitals. In prior roles, he served as the Vice President of Strategy & Operations in the Allegheny Health Network home healthcare division, as well as Corporate Vice President of IT in the hospital division. He worked for several years as the National Pharmacy Practice Director in the Healthcare Advisory Practice at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and as a Director for Huron Consulting in Chicago. In the provider space, he served as the Director of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, and the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. In addition, he served 6 years as a professor and department Vice Chair at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in which he was responsible for the creation and administration of two masters programs in two different schools on campus, and the creation of a Management Residency Program. During his academic career, he has precepted and mentored more than 180 clinicians and administrators. Dr. Mark has received a variety of national awards for education, leadership, mentoring, marketing, and professional service and was inducted into the National Academy of Practice (NAP) as a Distinguished Practitioner, and subsequently served as the Chair. Dr. Mark has served as an Invited Lecturer at a variety of universities, and regularly presents at professional meetings. He has given more than 125 presentations at state and national meetings, and more than 180 university lectures. In addition, he has published over 70 manuscripts and 30 book chapters and served as the Co-Editor of a monthly national column on practice issues.
